Why You Should Go Vegan In Munich (At Least Once)
When you first think of Munich, you probably think of butter-laden brezeln and weisswurst the size of your head. While those things are definitely worth trying, what if I told you the most memorable dining experiences I had in Munich were entirely vegan?
This article will walk you through how to spend the perfect day in Munich without a bratwurst in sight, and why going vegan might just lead you to the hippest areas in the city.
Emmi’s Kitchen: The places where you can find vegan food in Munich are often the more hipster and alternative areas (which can be hard to come by in this traditional and wealthy German city).
Hidden in a hinterhof is Emmi's, a bright garden space offering vegan burgers and breakfast foods. Even for non-vegans, this place is worth visiting for its leafy surroundings alone.
Address: Buttermelcherstraße 11-15, 80469 München
Siggis: On the same street as Emmi’s is Siggi’s, another vegan eatery serving the best burger in Munich, vegan or not.
Make sure to get the Cuddly (walnut stuffed dates wrapped in crispy seitan) and the Hotshrooms (deep-fried mushrooms served with tahini and spicy dipping sauces).
Address: Buttermelcherstraße 17, 80469 München
Gute Nacht Wurst: Situated right off the picturesque and trendy Gärtnerplatz (pictured above) is Gute Nacht Wurst, where you can go to enjoy both vegan and non-vegan currywurst options along with homemade sauces like vegan truffle mayo and chili sauce.
Centered around a lush town square and a beautiful fountain, this area is worth a visit even if you aren’t in the mood for currywurst. In the warmer months, families and young people enjoy the afternoon in the center square across from the Gärtnerplatztheater.
Address: Klenzestraße 32, 80469 München
Pack a snack for the park: One of the best ways to get to know a culture is by visiting the local supermarket. Munich is full of biomarkte (organic supermarkets with plenty of vegan options).
For a budget-friendly and outdoorsy meal, pack a light picnic and enjoy it on the beautiful Museumsinsel (pictured above) or Englischer Garten, both located along the Isar river.
Biomarkt near Museumsinsel: VollCorner Biomarkt, Innere Wiener Straße 52, 81667 München
Biomarkt near English Garten: Biomarkt Bioparadies, Lerchenfeldstraße 10, 80538 München
While vegan food in Munich might seem counterintuitive, it is actually a crucial part of Germany’s modern culture. Veganism in Germany doesn’t just mean people are getting pickier with their eating habits; it represents the country’s active youth culture, prioritization of environmental protection, and forward-thinking nature.
