Sunny Tuesday

Another sunny day in Berlin demands long bike-rides, pit-stops at coffee places, and people watching. I let the well-marked bike-paths lead me to Kreuzberg yet again, where I lounged at Companion Coffee located on Oranienstrasse. As the guy to my left read Camus, and the pair to my right spoke a compelling cocktail of English and German between cigarette drags, I didn't even find the need to open my book.

 After a cappuccino, I wandered to a beautiful nearby park, where I was greeted by Berlin's signature mash-up: green and graffiti.
That old man had a tulip on his head, and baguette-riding pin up girls on his shirt. God bless this city.

Many stereotypes of German culture stem from the southern city of Munich.  This Bavarian town is home to lederhosen, Oktoberfest, and baked pretzels as big as your beer stein. Saturday in Siena

The medieval Tuscan hill town of Siena is just an hour by train from Florence. Despite its small size, it is home to a bustling university and is one of Italy’s most visited cities.  You don’t really need a map in Siena, as most of the streets slant downward, acting as a natural people-funnel to the main Piazza del Campo.  The outskirts of the city are equally impressive, as the elevated position of Siena grants you a sprawling view of idyllic vineyards and countryside.  I only spent a few hours in the city, had lunch at the first place where I couldn’t hear any English, and headed back to Florence feeling completely satisfied. Scotland: Glasgow and Edinburgh Reflection

Scotland is not “chill”. Even during the super touristy and internationally focused Fringe Festival, Edinburgh managed to shine through in short and concentrated bursts.  A guy donning a traffic cone as a hat. Old friends simultaneously smashing their beer pitchers on the ground in joyful exclamation. A somehow soaked man screaming words of racial acceptance into the afternoon air. “I don’t fackin care if yer black or yer white, YOU ARE WELCOME BY ME.” Dogs are encouraged almost anywhere, and locals will actively chase you down to correct the slightly false directions they gave you five minutes earlier. There’s a warmth to Scotland that emanates from the cobble-stone streets and extends to the crooked smiles of its people.
